The use of sodium polystyrene sulfonate is contraindicated in patients with hypokalemia. Serious potassium deficiency can occur from therapy with sodium polystyrene sulfonate. Monitoring serum potassium levels carefully and evaluating the patient's clinical condition and electrocardiogram may be necessary.
