Consumer:Patients with gastrointestinal obstruction, particularly paralytic ileus, should generally not be given sustained-release oral formulations of narcotic analgesics. Opioid agents are is contraindicated in patients with known or suspected gastrointestinal obstruction, including paralytic ileus. In such patients, the ingested drug may remain in the stomach for an extended period of time, then released suddenly as a bolus when normal gut motility is restored, thereby increasing the risk for adverse effects and/or an overdose.
